Buprenorphine Use In Arizona
Due to the prime location of Arizona, next to the some of the major drug
trafficking places in the US like the Mexican state of Sonora, in the
recent years drug addiction and painkiller abuse has reached epidemic
proportions. Hence, in order to render effective drug addiction treatment,
the legislation has taken steps to establish an efficient monitoring
system and integrate drug abuse prevention within the community. Drug
abuse prevention is an effective tool though which the government intends
to eradicate incidences of drug related crimes and violence in the
community and educate the population in issues related to drug abuse
prevention, in order to create a healthy environment.
Prevention programs are advocated at all levels, starting right from
preschool onwards and address social issues including aggressive behavior
and academic difficulties. All drug abuse prevention programs should
necessarily aim at rectifying all forms of drug abuse, including those of
diversion of prescription painkillers, which is an even greater problem as
compared to the consumption of conventional drugs. The concerned
authorities in Arizona have implemented drug abuse prevention programs
that have invested efforts with a view to also address other forms of
addiction like underage use of illegal drugs, ‘doctor shopping’ and easy
access to drugs through the internet.
Fortunately, with the giant leaps that mankind had made in the field of
medicine, now there is a less stigmatizing drug addiction treatment
available for opiate addicts that can be followed from the comfort and
privacy of home. Suboxone is a first of its kind treatment available for
opioid addiction that not only guarantees successful, but complete
recovery. Conventional treatments were not only time consuming and costly
but also required the addict to stay at the rehab center till the
treatment was completed. The best advantage about suboxone is that it can
be dispensed like any other medicines.
Buprenorphine is the primary constituent of suboxone which acts as a
partial opioid agonist. Suboxone also contains naloxene which serves the
purpose of an opioid antagonist. In other words, the presence of naloxene
discourages the misuse of suboxone from dissolving or injecting the
buprenorphine preparation. In case, the medication is injected into the
bloodstream, the addict immediately experiences symptoms of withdrawal.
Hence, buprenorphine preparations like suboxone are effectively used to
treat opiate addicts by helping to curb opiate withdrawal symptoms, reduce
cravings for the opioid, decrease the illicit use of opioids, block the
addictive effects of other opioids, and enable the addict to complete the
treatment.
The ARCA (Assisted Recovery Centers of Arizona) has thus made an effort in
this direction. The organization was conceived in April 1996 by the state
of Arizona, with a view to adopt a cognitive approach to therapy along
with the appropriate medication. Assisted Recovery has become a pioneer in
the field of drug addiction and abuse treatment because it had efficiently
implemented academic research and programs into established and successful
recovery programs. It integrates medication in combination with
psychological support. Additionally, it also identifies the biological,
psychological and social condition of the addict and reinforces treatments
that address each of these issues for a comparatively better outcome. All
the three components combined together make the program more effective and
successful.
