Drug addiction in California
(Prevalence, frequency, history, incarcerations etc)
Individuals, who get addicted to drugs, have not set out to destroy themselves.
They get into this vicious circle due to their surroundings or emotional stress.
Some find drugs a great substitute to avert emotional or physical pain by
providing the user temporary relaxation from his present situation. They feel
that the drug solves all their pain and misery. Initially, the individuals seek
relief through drugs then this curse takes over them, and thus they lose the
ability to control the usage. Drug addiction results due to over consumption and
then physiologically, forms a habit. Fundamentally all drugs are painkillers and
they provide the user an illusionary escape and solace from life’s dreadful
realities. Serious issues start by over usage of drugs, as the people who
consume them begin to exhibit strange behavior caused due to drug addiction.
California is a beautiful state located on the Pacific coast of North America
and this state is well known to have diverse climate and an ethnically diverse
population. This state has 48 counties. California gold rush began in the year
1848 and this beautiful state dramatically changed due to the influx of the
population as well as economic boom. San Francisco became the financial and
cultural center of this beautiful state. California boasts of mixed populations
like White Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, American Indians,
Hispanic and non-Hispanic whites.
History-This beautiful state is a home to several significant regions, like
Hollywood - famous for entertainment and California Central Valley - for
agriculture, and the Silicon Valley - for computers and high tech. Per capita
income of each individual is around $38,956 and it ranks as the 11th state in
per capita due to its geographical distribution and professional openings.
Central Valley is highly impoverished due to immigrant farm workers who earn a
low daily income. America has been fighting poverty for the past three decades
and achieved success, but this rate has slowed down considerably since 1996. The
progress reports have dropped down considerably and today about 5.4 million
people live below poverty line. All through America, several single mothers are
fighting poverty and raising children by themselves. Children from broken
families tend to suffer from drug abuse and become violent and end up in prison
for criminal cases or drug abuse.
Prevalence- As per survey, California suffers from high cocaine addiction that
is generally sold on the streets. Street dealers generally dilute the drugs with
inert substances as cornstarch, talcum powders or even sugar. Children between
the age group of 12-17 years and within the age group of 18-25 are the ones who
use cocaine. 13 million Americans are addicted to illegal drugs like cocaine,
heroin, marijuana, hashish, hallucinogens, inhalants or any psychotherapeutic
drugs. Drug addiction is caused largely due to poverty and frustration.
Frequency- As per a survey, the drug addiction rate increased in California and
Arizona. Pharmaceutical drug usage is steadily increasing and the most commonly
used ones are hydrocodone, oxycontin and Xanax. These drugs are usually obtained
via medicinal forgeries. Drug trafficking for the most part involves laundering
of money and theft.
Incarceration- Drug imprisonments vary from state to state and residents are
imprisoned for low-level drug possessions too. California implemented an
unprecedented social experiment to curb illicit drug abuse by implementing law
enforced strategies.
