Drug treatment in Florida
Florida is a state in the US is known for its tropical beaches and warm weather.
It is also a state where the level of immigration from Latin America and other
parts of the world is the highest. But due to the proximity of Miami with
countries that are involved in the production of drugs and trafficking, this
state has become a door for entry of illegal substances. The drugs that come
through Miami get distributed all over the state and in the country. Due to
Florida being the primary area for international money laundering and drug
trafficking, the number of drug addicts in the state is also very high.
Smuggling of dangerous drugs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine takes
place in Florida through cargo services, commercial airplanes, rail and even
public transportation and because of easy accessibility many youngsters are
becoming drug addicts.
As far as drug abuse is concerned, Florida witnessed the highest number of
admission in drug addiction treatment centers and drug rehab centers in the year
2004. Based on statistics, almost 65% of Florida’s drug addiction and rehab
treatment program admissions are male and approximately 73.9% of all the
programs for drug rehabs admissions have some relation with a white person. In
the year 2004, the percentage of admission to drug and alcohol rehab programs in
Florida was 21% and it included young people between 12 and 17. In the same
year, the amount of people who were admitted for treatment for addiction to
hashish and marijuana surpassed admissions to alcohol rehabs. Marijuana is a
drug that is grown in Florida and even imported. This results in easy access of
this drug in the state.
Drug abuse, drug addiction and dependency on alcohol in this state can be
treated through specialized facilities that are available for the treatment of
such addictions. Florida is full of mental health clinics and treatment centers
that are run by certified counselors for drug abuse, assisted by psychologists,
social workers and specialized physicians. Based on the facility for drug rehab,
treatment of addiction is either delivered via inpatient addiction treatment,
outpatient addiction treatment or residential addiction treatment. There are
certain approaches for addiction treatment that are related with specific
treatment settings, but various therapeutic services or interventions can also
be included in any treatment environment for addiction.
Even the state government has passed certain laws in order to tackle the problem
of increasing drug addiction. According to the government, if an individual is a
drug addict and acts non-violent, then he or she has the right to rehabilitation
and treatment. If a person is convicted of being a drug addict then instead of
incarceration or sentencing, he or she will be given the chance to select the
right treatment. But people, who commit crime after taking drugs, will not be
spared and the ones who are unnamable will be prosecuted.
