Drug abuse prevention in Florida

Florida is not only a hub of national transportation, but also a popular illicit drug distribution center. Drug rehabilitation, especially in South Florida has become a key issue. The transportation infrastructure in Florida is well developed and because of its proximity to various countries involved in drug trafficking, it has become an ideal place for international money laundering and trafficking of drugs. Be it commercial airplanes, rail, maritime vessels or courier services, drugs are being transported to this state through almost every means. The rate of drug abuse in this state is on the rise even though there are several drug addiction treatment centers.

The trade of drugs in Florida is controlled by the Columbian and Mexican organizations and the abuse of all these drugs is on rise in the state. Cocaine as well as methamphetamine abuse is a problem in most parts of Florida. Youngsters within the age group of 11-17 years are the hardest hit with drug abuse.

Various steps have been taken by the government to bring down the drug abuse rate throughout the state. In the year 1999, the Florida Drug Control Strategy for curtailing the drug abuse problem defined ‘prevention’ as the perfect measure. With the Florida Prevention System publication, the approach to prevention was institutionalized. The Florida prevention system was a scientific approach that was helpful in delineating the protective factors and risks that can decrease drug or any other substance abuse. This system was made for direction of policies, creation of resource database, sustenance of collaborations and to develop systems for utilizing prevention all over Florida.

The core principals for almost every state-level prevention effort in Florida included: collaboration within the key agencies and stakeholders, funding resources braiding from several sources, support community coalitions for anti drug along with the use of various framework models meant for prevention of drug abuse. For decades, drugs and alcohol have been the most popular substances of abuse by youths. Various Florida law enforcement agencies and communities for drug prevention have joined hands to protect the youth in Florida from drug abuse. With the help of the collaboration between several agencies, model programs are being promoted and initiatives are being taken to curtail drug and alcohol abuse. Efforts are being made to bring down youth drug use in elementary, middle and high schools as well as colleges. The Florida government has designed many programs especially for school students so that they do not become a victim of drugs. The state is encouraging communities, neighborhoods and campuses to introduce programs so that this alarming problem can be curtailed. Many community coalitions have also been set up in Florida, dedicated to reduce drug abuse in particular communities. Drug laws have also been made mandatory due to the recent explosion of drug abuse in the state.
