States like Florida are now regulating physicians who prescribe painkillers and penalties are being increased on people who sell prescription drugs. Due to the recent developments in Florida, the severity of prescription drug abuse has been exposed. A study was conducted on prescriptions provided by many doctors and it was stated that many doctors in Florida are prescribing powerful painkillers. Many pharmacies even paid million dollars for potent drugs and the prescriptions were filled with maximum doses. According to research, various painkillers are growing in popularity in Florida with a frequency that is quiet alarming.

In Florida, the powerful pain killer OxyContin’s addiction and abuse has reached to proportions of an epidemic, forcing the state legislators take necessary action. This state has witnessed five deaths a day due to this addiction. Just after few years of Oxycontin being introduced in the market, its addiction surpassed cocaine and heroine and resulted in an epidemic. In the year 2003, a task force was launched for investigating what impact the Oxycontin abuse can have in case of heavy doses.
