Pain killer abuse/addiction in Florida
Painkillers also known as opioids, are prescribed commonly due to the properties
inherent for relieving pain. Prescription drug and pain killer addiction and
abuse are increasing in America. Users as well as abusers of prescription drugs
and painkillers can be found within all age groups. Generally, the problem of
prescription drug abuse is on rise in Florida and other states in US and
unfortunately, painkillers are the largest abused prescription drugs. It the
last few years, this problem has hit America real hard. Even kids within the age
group of four to five years in Florida have been found stealing painkillers like
vicodin, oxycontin and percocet from the prescription bottles of their parents.
Many spend their allowances in buying painkillers from their classmates. Pain
killer abuse as well as addiction is one alarming problem that America seems to
be unaware of. It is no fun getting addicted to painkillers because after a
certain period it starts bringing a lot of chemical changes within your brain
and due to this even people with self-control find it difficult to quit.
Painkillers can take over your life completely and addiction can become
obsession and you are unable to quit without methadone or suboxone, which are
very expensive. Many people even start taking heroin in order to save money.
They find it a better substitute when pain killers are not available to them. It
will be like a drug epidemic that will plague America totally if it is not
stopped.
Law enforcement and state policymakers are searching for solutions to tackle the
widespread abuse and addiction of painkillers. States like Florida are now
regulating physicians who prescribe painkillers and penalties are being
increased on people who sell prescription drugs. Due to the recent developments
in Florida, the severity of prescription drug abuse has been exposed. A study
was conducted on prescriptions provided by many doctors and it was stated that
many doctors in Florida are prescribing powerful painkillers. Many pharmacies
even paid million dollars for potent drugs and the prescriptions were filled
with maximum doses. According to research, various painkillers are growing in
popularity in Florida with a frequency that is quiet alarming.
In Florida, the powerful pain killer OxyContin’s addiction and abuse has reached
to proportions of an epidemic, forcing the state legislators take necessary
action. This state has witnessed five deaths a day due to this addiction. Just
after few years of Oxycontin being introduced in the market, its addiction
surpassed cocaine and heroine and resulted in an epidemic. In the year 2003, a
task force was launched for investigating what impact the Oxycontin abuse can
have in case of heavy doses. A monitoring system was also established so that it
became easy to keep a track of the prescription of the drug.
