Drug addiction in Illinois
Mainly due to its geographical location and its multi-faceted infrastructure that includes highly developed transportation systems, communications, and a multitude of interstates, the state of Illinois has remained one of the major hubs of drug trafficking over the past few decades. The state remains to be the hot favorite for drug traffickers because it is relatively easier to bring the drugs into Chicago, the main commercial hub in the state. The drugs are usually routed through different channels such as commercial vehicles, interstate public transport buses, private cars and pick-up trucks, package delivery services, air courier services, making it quite difficult for law enforcement agencies to detect each and every consignment that might be making its way to the state of Illinois.
Although a major portion of the banned drugs is redistributed across Midwestern and Eastern regions by drug cartels, there still remains enough in the city streets of Chicago and other commercial hubs to create problems for the state. Since the most commonly used drugs such as cocaine, meth (Methamphetamine), marijuana, and others are readily available, the state of Illinois has had to deal with an ever-increasing number of drug addiction cases in the last few years. Evidence is available in the total number of drug-related incarcerations, which had increased to a staggering 11,577 cases in 2001, just around double when compared to the 1993’s figure of 6925.
Stricter laws have been passed in the last few years, but even then the growing menace of drug addiction in Illinois just refuses to die down. The main problem is that there are just too many drug dealers and suppliers in the state, making it quite difficult for law enforcement agencies to find the right targets. Some of the major drug trafficking groups that operate in the state include the poly-drug organizations based in Mexico, Columbia based drug cartels dealing in cocaine and heroine and West African warlords that mainly supply Southeast and Southwest Asian heroin. What makes the situation even more perplexing is the fact that the local distribution and sales is carried out by street gangs such as Gangster Disciples, Vice Lords, and Latin Kings and others, most of which are based in the bustling city of Chicago. This is certainly not helping law enforcement agencies because the main suppliers hardly ever get caught and those who do get into the police net often turn out to be small time peddlers, who can always be replaced by new ones.
Drug addiction may seem to be the only negative fallout of drug trafficking in the state of Illinois, but as governmental agencies have pointed out, drug trafficking also creates many other problems such as money laundering and cases of violent crimes as a result of inter-gang rivalry. Since, it is quite clear that mere policing will not solve drug addiction problems, the government should try out other available options such as anti-drugs awareness programs and rehab solutions. This will be like eliminating the root cause and as such will help a lot in eliminating the growing menace of drug addiction in Illinois.
