Drug addiction in Indiana

The results of one of the most recent annual surveys regarding the use of tobacco, alcohol and other type of drugs by adolescents and children in Indiana is quite encouraging. The results that were published in August 2007 when collated with earlier data reveal that there has been a steady decline in drug use during the past nine years among Indiana youth. The decrease in drug use is attributable to community participation with dedicated focus on decreasing adolescent drug use as a priority. The results of the survey confirm that their efforts are bearing fruit.

However, it is alarming to note that cigar and pipe use has increased although use of smokeless tobacco and cigarettes has decreased. The survey that involved more that 150,000 students studying in grades 6 through 12 also found a slight increase in the use of marijuana and gambling among students of grades 7 to 12. Drug addiction is a scourge causing universal affliction primarily gripping the youth of the society in its vicious and deadly jaws. Drug abuse is related to a very wide range of drugs like anabolic steroids, analgetics, barbiturates, buprenorphine, laxatives, amphetamines, sedatives and opium.

A drug addict is pushed into deep dungeons of oblivion. Psychologists and researchers have found that people take to drugs because they want to forget and negate their frustrations and failures in life. Many are dejected in love affairs or have severe family problems that force them into depression. There are also those who get addicted while having ‘fun’ and ‘adventure’.

The drug situation in Indiana should not be taken lightly. Nationally Indiana is considered an active drug transportation and distribution area, with automobile, trucking (highway), and airline trafficking forming the primary means of drug import in the state. There is ready availability of cocaine in powdered form throughout Indiana with crack cocaine availability limited to urban areas. While heroin, methamphetamine and club drugs like Ketamine, Ecstacy and LSD are not the major problems, marijuana poses a much bigger threat. It is cultivated locally everywhere in the state, both on indoor and outdoor sites.

Recovery from drug addiction is by going through a tough process. As this is a chronic disorder it cannot be effectively treated in the short term. The only way to beat drug addiction is to undergo continued long-term treatment under a suitable drug rehabilitation program. The program can include behavioral therapy and/or medication. A combination of both medical treatment and behavioral therapy is found to be the most effective way to combat and overcome this problem. Above all, there has to be a strong desire to kick the habit. The addict’s strong will power plays a crucial role in his treatment and recovery.

Many of the people addicted to drugs try to end their dependence on drugs on their own. Though the effort is commendable and reflects an understanding of the predicament, the user’s resolve breaks down after some time and the person once again starts using drugs. The reason for this, according to research is due to the substantial changes in brain functioning resulting from prolonged drug use. The changes continue long after the person stops taking drugs. The best-proven way to successful detoxification from drugs is through a good drug rehabilitation program.
