Buprenorphine use in Texas
Incarcerations
The nation’s war against drugs has intensified since 1980 and Texas
followed this trend by increasing the punishments and prisons for handling
drug peddlers. Hundreds of drug peddlers were arrested, imprisoned, and
convicted thus disrupting their family lives and reducing their future job
prospects.
Texas’s drug policy faced a complete turnaround in the form of Proposition
36, the Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act. This Act came into
affect on the ballot November 7, 2000 and this act proposed treating drugs
abuse as primary health issue rather than treating it as criminal offense.
Certified physicians are exempted from training requirements and various
doctors in Texas prescribe Buprenorphine use and thus prevent its abuse to
some extent.
