Alfentanil ~ Administration
In patients who suffer from compromised liver function and in geriatric patients, the plasma clearance of Alfentanil may be reduced and postoperative recovery may be prolonged so as to avoid side effects. Induction doses of Alfentanil should be administered carefully and slowly (over three minutes). Administration in a hurried manner may produce hypotension and loss of vascular tone. As a muscle relaxant the hemodynamic effects and the level of skeletal muscle relaxation that is required should be considered while selecting a neuromuscular blocking agent.
During General Anesthesia Alfentanil infusions should be discontinued at least 10-15 minutes prior to the end of surgery. During administration of Alfentanil for any person precautionary measures such as oxygen, necessary life saving equipments have to be kept readily available. Hence it is suggested that this medicine should be injected/given under proper care only.
