Alfentanil ~ Study and Side effects

At times Blood pressure of a patient may decrease by usage of intravenous diazepam that is immediately before or after administering high doses of Alfentanil and so recovery may also be prolonged. Patients have not exhibited any marked increase in histamine levels even after consuming doses of up to 200 mcg/kg of Alfentanil and shown no specific clinical evidence of histamine release.

The increased airway resistance and respiratory depression normally go up with dose, though they also occur at lower doses. Monitored anesthesia care (MAC), attention must be given to the patients who suffer from respiratory effects of Alfentanil. This may cause decreased respiratory rate, apnea, decreased oxygen saturation, and upper airway obstruction.Patients with known hypersensitivity should avoid consuming this drug as it is contraindicated in such patients. When this medicine is injected oxygen should be readily available.

This medicine causes loss of consciousness, muscular rigidity, bradycardia, respiratory depression, and respiratory arrest. Hence, continuous monitoring is required while consuming this medicine
