Administration/Dosage of Butorphanol

Butorphanol is administered in the patient's body in two ways – as an injection or as a nasal spray.

  1. Administration for Butorphanol injections – Butorphanol injections are given into the vein or into the muscle. The dosage depends upon the overall physical condition of the person and age. Children have different dosages than adults, and both dosages for children and adults are determined on a case to case basis. That is the reason why Butorphanol injections are provided only by qualified health professionals.
  2. Administration for Butorphanol nasal spray – Butorphanol sprays are available, which are meant only for nasal use. The dosages for the sprays are mentioned on the pump. They are meant to be sprayed into one nostril at a time, after priming the pump. Relief from pain is usually obtained after one spray in each nostril. If not, then an additional spray is done after an hour or an hour and half.
