Side Effects of Butorphanol

Butorphanol is an opioid analgesic, and it carries all the side-effects that analgesics do. The following are some of the side-effects that might occur. These side-effects depend from person to person, and some people might not show any side-effects at all.

  1.  Less frequently observed side-effects – Butorphanol might cause several mental conditions such as a panicky feeling, anxiety, nervousness and confusion. There might be difficulty in breathing. Some people might report a fever, or else the skin might become cold to touch. Perspiration might break out after an administration. Tinnitus might occur (a ringing sensation in the ears) and there might be bleeding from the nose. In rarer cases, there are episodes of fainting, and irregularities in the heartbeat. All these side-effects are less frequent, but they might be serious conditions if they occur. Stop the administration immediately and seek medical attention when any of these happen.
  2. Frequently observed side-effects – Butorphanol can cause some commonly observed side-effects like loss of sensation of taste, loss of appetite and dryness of the mouth. There might be difficulty in discharging bowel movements and in passing urine. Some people might suffer from insomnia. Headache is commonly observed, along with a runny and stuffy nasal tract. Nausea and vomiting might occur, and there might be cases of stomachaches. These side-effects are not so serious; but require medical attention if they persist.
