Dosage of Meperidine
The dosage of meperidine is determined on the basis of the acuteness of
the pain. Another factor that is taken into account when prescribing the
patient is the effectiveness of the drug to the patient's case. In mild
cases, oral administration is usually prescribed, while in severe pain,
parenteral administration such as intravenous or intramuscular are
prescribed.
The following are the prescribed dosages for adults and children:
- Dosage for adults – Adults are prescribed 50 to 150 milligrams orally, to be taken at intervals of every three to four hours.
- Dosage for children – The prescribed dosage for children begins from 1.1 to 1.8 milligrams per kilogram, and might go up to the dosage suitable for adults. The duration between doses is to be kept at three to four hours.
In case meperidine is concurrently prescribed with tranquilizers and phenothiazines, then the dosage of the drug needs to be reduced by about a quarter or half the usual dosage. The usual vehicle to consume the drug is through half a glass of water in order to reduce its numbing effect on the mucus membranes.
