Meperidine is an orally or intravenously or intramuscularly administrated drug for the treatment of pain, moderate to severe. It is available in the form of a syrup, as tablets as meperidine hydrochloride, or even in the form of injections. It is sold in several alternative names in the market, such as Algil, Alodan, Centralgin, Demerol, Dispadol, Dolantin, Dolestine, Dolosal and Mefedina. The other non-brand names for meperidine are isonipecaine, lidol, pethanol, pethidine and piridosal. Demerol is its popular name in North America. It is classified as an opioid analgesic drug.
