Oxymorphone is a semi-synthetic drug substitute for morphine. As an analgesic it is mainly used to reduce pain. An analgesic exerts its principal pharmacologic effects on the CNS and the gastrointestinal tract. The principal actions of this drug are analgesia and sedation. It acts directly on brain stem respiratory centers and produces respiratory depression. The mechanism of this drug concerns a decrease in the responsiveness of the brain stem respiratory centers which makes us drowsy and inactive.
